Shattered pieces doesn't mean shattered dreams.

Updated: Dec 31, 2023

It was a typical start to my day. I was reaching for my morning coffee and I dropped my mug. Not just any mug. It was my favorite mug. The one that fit perfectly in my hands and was purchased on our annniversay get-a-way the year before. Was it actually ever in my hand? I don't remember having any grip on it. I just watched it fall onto the kitchen floor. I looked down and saw shattered ceramic pieces lying in a pool of caramel flavored coffee and sweet cream. Sadness. But why?! It's a mug. An inanimate object. In that split second, I had already talked myself through the disappointment. I can get another one the next time we visit there again. I don't need another mug because our coffee area has plenty to choose from. So why the sad reaction? Why in that moment did I feel sadness or disappointment? This lovely mug had some senimental value, but the shattering of the ceramic represents a bit more. My go-to mug was gone and it was time to reach for something else and embrace the change. The same is true when we need to step out of our comfort zones and make changes in our own lives. We find comfort in our familiar situations, but there, we also find complacency. Less than a year ago I knew I wanted to try something new for an occupation. My cleaning business had taken off and was continuing to grow, but I knew this wasn't going to be sustainable for the long term because of the physical toll it takes on my aging body. In August I took the first step toward creating a new business venture. This journey is both exciting and overwhelming, but it is the "something new" that I need to reach for and embrace. My favorite mug may have shattered, but my sights on a new venture, has not.
